OVERVIEW
POSTERS AND FACT-SHEETS
Posters and Fact-Sheets are a
common assessment genre in the
Discipline of Counselling.
They require students to make
complex information accessible to
a wide-range of audiences, which is
an important transferable skill.
The key to creating a sophisticated
poster is less about design, and more
about understanding what the chosen
audience needs to know about the
poster topic.

UNPACK THE ASSIGNMENT
Poster and Fact-Sheet assignments should be formatted according to the following criteria,
unless instructed otherwise.
Always check your Unit Outline for instructions on how to format your assignments.
– MS Word or PowerPoint
– First page: A4 Assignment Cover Sheet (if using PowerPoint, submit this
separately)
– Second page: A2 Poster
– References: Included in a text box on the A2 Poster (second page)
– Orientation: Landscape OR Portrait
– Font: Times New Roman, 12pt. The References text box may use 8-10pt.
– Line Spacing: Single
– Colour and Graphics: Chosen for the purpose of communicating or enhancing
information, rather than decoration.
– Word Count: Consult the Assessment Criteria in the Unit Outline.

USING POWERPOINT
– It is easier to move images and text boxes in PowerPoint.
– There are more design functions, if you want to get fancy.
– Many of the functions mentioned earlier remain the same. The key
differences are:
– You will have to upload your cover sheet separately;
– Some of the functions are in a slightly different place than they
are in Word.
CHANGE PAGE SIZE TO A2
1. Click on the slide that you wish to make A2
2. Go to the Design tab
3. Click on ‘Slide Size’ and choose Custom Size from
the drop-down menu.
4. Change the width of the page to 42 cm and the
height to 55.87cm
5. Click OK
DESIGN FEATURES
The design tab also has a number of designs and
functions to jazz up your poster. Feel free to explore and
select whichever design appeals to you!
ADD A PAGE NUMBER
The easiest way to add a page
number to the top right corner in
PowerPoint is simply to draw a text
box and insert the number.
In Word it is a bit more of a process
because the Cover Sheet is on the
first page.

drawing and shapes menu
from the Home tab, or you

“Formatting” tab will appear in the same way
as demonstrated for Word.
You can also use the “drawing” shortcuts on
the Home tab to format your shape outlines,
fills, and effects.

IMAGES AND DRAWING TOOLS

of the images, drawing and
illustration tools that you
need. You can also create
charts and tables if
necessary.
