Assignment 1 PSYC 101 – Dr. Zoë Francis WINTER 2021 ASSIGNMENT OVERVIEW In this assignment, you will investigate a recently published psychology study. We will be using the website PsyPost, which summarizes recent peer-reviewed publications that have been published in academic psychology journals. PsyPost describes the methods and results of the original journal article in more accessible and shorter formats (compared to the original academic journal article) and also often interview the researchers directly. In this assignment, you will choose a PsyPost article and answer a number of questions about the research methods used by that research study. ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS Part 1 (Question 1). Go to https://www.psypost.org/. Browse through any of the categories (Mental Health, Social Psychology, Drug Research, Cognitive Science), or use the search bar to look up a topic you are interested in. Choose ONE PsyPost article to use for this article. 1. Use APA formatting to reference the newspaper article. Your reference should look like this: Ellwood, B. (2020, March 24). New psychology study finds people overestimate the intelligence of their romantic partners. PsyPost. https://www.psypost.org/2020/03/new-psychologystudy-finds-people-overestimate-the-intelligence-of-their-romantic-partners-56225 LastName, I. (Year, Date). Title of the newspaper article with this “sentence” type of capitalization. Name of Newspaper Italicized. https://www.thefullURLhere.com For more help about APA style, check out: https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/apa_style/apa_formatting_and_st yle_guide/reference_list_articles_in_periodicals.html Part 2 (Questions 2-7). Answer the following questions about that psychology study. Your answers can be in point-form. You do NOT have to write in fullsentence or paragraph form, but your answers must be comprehensible. 2. What type of study was this? Choose from: correlational, experimental, or descriptive. 3. If it was an experiment: What was the independent variable? What was the dependent variable? If it was not an experiment: What were the main variables? 4. For one of the main variables in the study, provide the operational definition used by the researchers. Make sure it is clear which conceptual variable this operational definition corresponds to. 5. What was the main result of this psychology study? (Make sure to write in your own words, do not plagiarize). 6. Who were the participants in the study? What population would this study generalize to? 7. Do you think that this is an example of basic or applied research? Why? 8. Who were the researchers who conducted the study? What journal was this research published in? Bonus: Can you find the researcher’ website online? Or can you find the researcher’s profile at their university or institution? If so, include a URL link to their website. If there were multiple authors, try looking up either the last author or the first author. Part 3 (Question 9-10). Write down your personal response to this psychology study. Do not use point-form. 9. – In 2-3 full sentences, answer one of the following questions: Did you find the results of the study to be surprising? Why or why not? Why did you choose this article? Do you think this research is useful for people to know? Why or why not? 10. Write down a remaining question that you have after reading the article. What else do you want to know? LOGISTICS This assignment is due by 11:59pm on Monday, January 25th, 2021. Late submissions will have 20% deducted per day. The assignment should be submitted via MyClass as a .doc, .docx, or .pdf file. (Links to Google Docs will not be accepted). I recommend using numbers or bullet points to respond to each question (1-10). The formatting (font, spacing, bullet points, etc.) will not be graded, but I recommend getting in the habit of using APA formatting (double-spaced, 1-inch margins, size 12 font). This assignment is worth 6% of your total course grade. If you have a question, first make sure that you’ve read the entire assignment page to see if your question has already been answered. If you still have a question, please send me an email! QUESTIONS? The PsyPost article that I chose doesn’t include the answers to all of the questions! What do I do? If a lot of information is unavailable in the article (you are missing the answers to more than one question), then I recommend switching to use a different article. Remember that most of this information is not going to be explicitly stated – for example, you will have to determine yourself what the independent variable and dependent variables are, based on the general description of the study. The research that I’m talking about is correlational (or descriptive) – how do I answer the questions about independent and dependent variables? For correlational research, neither variable is the dependent or independent variable. They are both just … variables! In this case, for question 3, you can state the two key variables in either order. Descriptive research, in rare cases, may have only a single variable (e.g., a study that describes how often the average person feels empathy for others in a typical day). In this case, for question 3, you will only need to state a single variable. However, double-check that there is not actually a second relevant variable (like the participant’s age for developmental research or time for longitudinal research). Can I work on this assignment with a friend? If you would like to discuss this assignment with other students, make sure that you each write your assignment on DIFFERENT PsyPost articles. You are certainly allowed to study and discuss course content with other students – indeed, talking about these ideas can enhance your own learning – but every student is responsible for submitting their own independent assignments and following all academic integrity guidelines. I don’t understand the article/I need help! If you are having troubles with the assignment, consider attending the Discussion Hour! If you still have questions about the assignment, make sure to email me (zoe.francis@ufv.ca) before noon on Friday, January 22nd to make sure that I have time to respond to you before the due date. For this reason, I recommend that you start working on the assignment as soon as you can. I can’t finish the assignment by the due date! What should I do? Late assignments will be accepted but will be penalized by 20% per day. If you have a medical reason (or another excusable reason) for a late submission, please follow the instructions on the syllabus. If you need an extension for any other reasons, please contact me as soon as possible, BEFORE the assignment deadline. …
