Supermax Prisons: Are they necessary?
Supermax prisons are “control-unit” prisons, or units within prisons, which represent the most secure levels of custody in the U.S. prison system. Over the last several decades, there has been a proliferation of supermax prison facilities. The justification for these prisons is that they are necessary to deal with high-risk, extremely dangerous or disruptive inmates in a prison population who need to be segregated for extended periods of time; the correctional goals are safety, order, control, and incapacitation of violent or disruptive inmates.
